Billie Eilish – Bury a Friend Lyrics Meaning Explained

Billie Eilish is fast gaining a reputation for releasing songs with rather ambiguous meanings. Bury a Friend is another of such songs. The song will leave one scratching their head trying to decipher the meaning. This is not to say the song is in any way bad, in fact, the song – despite its hidden meaning – is a masterclass in terms of concept, vocals, and production and it deservedly did well. Here, we try to dissect the song as best as we can.

What is the Billie Eilish Bury a Friend Lyrics Meaning?

Billie might probably be singing about a particular part of her, or perhaps her thoughts. She could also be referring to a person. She begins the song with a barrage of questions to the phenomenon. She wants to know why the stuff would not leave her. Perhaps she thought the person is haunting her. But then she also asks why the ‘thing’ cares for her, which might be a sarcastic question, as the tone of the song is solemn throughout and the next question, which is the last in the series is another thought-provoking one, as she asks “When we all fall asleep, where do we go?”. This is unlikely to be literal and she may be talking about death, trying to know whether there is life after death and what that kind of life would be, should it exist.

She confesses that she is thinking about scary things like getting drowned, slashing her veins by stepping on glass, cutting out ‘your’ tongue (apparently addressed to the person she is asking the questions from), everything pointing to suicide or, less likely, murder.

In the second verse, she has refused to connect with a certain person. She would not reveal her secrets to that person. She agrees to meet up with the person, although both of them already knew that the person would “fall apart” because of her “expensive” personality. She had actually thought that she would have died well ahead of this time, and this could probably be as a result of what the person did to her in the past. Now that she is still alive, she has Two options before her. She can either choose to “bury the hatchet or bury your friend now”.
