What is the Maroon 5 Girls Likey You Lyrics Meaning?

A definite “ear-worm”, this catchy song talks about an intense (to the point of real
dependence) relationship. As lyrics clearly say, it’s about someone who needs the loved one so badly even spending 24 yours together was not enough. The phrasing also hints at some kind of problem between the two by saying that they had to spend some time “making things right” between them.

Other than that, the song goes on in a pretty light mood. It’s just a guy who is very
much in love, and believes him and his girl were meant to be together “cause girls like you, run around with guys like me” – in a possible reference to the way in which they complete and complement each other.

It’s a song that shows deep appreciation for the women’s side of things, for while
Adam Levine’s voice melodically repeats “I need a girl like you, I need a girl like you”, Cardi B’s rap comes in firing everything up, with a tough kind of energy and words of self-awareness and self-worth. She says she doesn’t need a “prince charming“, she knows who she is and she likes it that way.

This kind of contrast was fully intended, as Levine himself, by the time he talked to
rapper Cardi B about her collaboration to the song said to her:
I want you to put something down that shows your fierceness as a woman and
say it however you want
”.

Interesting Facts about Song and Artists:

“Girls Like You” ft. Cardi B is the second version of this song (part of the band’s
the sixth studio album “Red Pill Blues”, of 2017). This version was written by Adam Levine, Cirkut, Cardi B, Starrah, Jason Evigan, and Gian Stone. Production was handled by Cirkut and J. Evigan.

“Girls Like You” was hugely successful, having spent 33 weeks as one of the top 10 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also made number one in 11 other
countries – such as Canada and New Zealand.

The song was also well-received by critics, receiving a nomination for “Best Pop
Duo/Group Performance” at the Grammy Awards.

The long stay of 33 weeks in top 10 on the Billboards equaled the previous record
held by Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” – the two songs now share the longevity record in this position, in the whole 60 years of its history.

“Girls Like You” was performed by Maroon 5 on their Super Bowl half-time show
of 2019. For this occasion they had a gospel choir and a drum-line joining them for this song.

Even though the Super Bowl show helped Maroon 5 on keeping “Girls Like You”
well rated in the charts, it didn’t come without a high price also, so to speak. The event ended up being controversial for the band because of the conflict involving athletes “taking the knee” during the national anthem (as a protest against racism) and being punished for it. Because of that, a number of other artists, such as Jay Z and Rihanna, refused the invitation to do the show in a demonstration of support for the players. As Maroon 5 agreed to perform, a lot of people criticized the band for it.
